On March 21, 2025, two suspects will stand trial for a gold theft discovered at a company on Coolsingel in 2019. This is the first public hearing in this investigation, which began six years ago.
The hearing on March 21 will be a so-called procedural hearing. The case will not yet be discussed in detail, but during the hearing, the status of the investigation will be discussed and the defenses investigative requests will be addressed.
Very Complex
The investigation into the gold theft is very complex and therefore has taken considerable time. The two suspects, aged 43 and 44, former directors of a vault rental company on Coolsingel, left for the United Arab Emirates around the time of the theft and were not available for police and justice. They are unlikely to be present at the hearing on March 21. An international arrest warrant was already issued against the two in 2020.
Stolen Goods Not Recovered
The gold was stolen from a vault at the company on Coolsingel. As no signs of forced entry were found, the police suspect an inside job. The precious metal was valued at approximately 40 million euros at the time. Due to the rising gold price, that amount has now increased to 100 million euros. Police and justice do not know where the gold is. Investigations into the gold and any possible investments made with it are still ongoing. The police urge anyone who may have information about this to report it. This can help advance the asset investigation.
