Under the leadership of the Public Prosecution Service East Netherlands, an extensive investigation has been conducted in recent months into candies containing cannabis that caused various (young) children to fall ill after consumption. This investigation has been completed, and there will be no criminal prosecution.
The first child was hospitalized in March of this year and fell into a coma. A few weeks later, a second child (from the same family) also fell ill. This child was also hospitalized in Almelo. A dog also became ill after eating a candy and was treated by a veterinarian.
Investigations were carried out into the circumstances under which the children obtained the candy and subsequently became ill. This investigation does not provide a clear picture. There is therefore insufficient evidence that the two individuals who were arrested and questioned had intent or guilt regarding the childrens illness.
It has also not become clear where the candy originated from. Since these two matters cannot be traced, the investigation is closed.
It has previously been established that a candy manufacturer had no involvement in this case.
