The Public Prosecution Service will not prosecute anyone for the death of a 51-year-old man who was detained in a police cell complex at Doelwater in Rotterdam in July 2025. This decision was made by the PPS based on an investigation by the National Police Internal Investigations Department.
On the night of July 17, 2025, the detainee became unwell in a cell at the Rotterdam police headquarters. After officers noticed this, he was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The investigation revealed that the man already had brain injury and ultimately died due to a new bleeding.
Furthermore, the PPS concludes that the police acted correctly during his arrest and detention, and that appropriate medical care was called in timely when necessary.
The parties involved have been informed of the decision.
