The Public Prosecution Service today demanded a four-year prison sentence, one year of which is conditional, against a former employee of the Municipality of Amsterdam who worked in Supervision and Enforcement. The woman (60) is suspected of having leaked and sold confidential information from the RDW database, which links license plates to names and addresses, to third parties. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the personal data provided was used in a shooting at a residence.
The case came to light after the police examined a seized phone during an investigation and found screenshots of confidential information from the RDW database or associated applications. In a series of attacks, shootings, and explosions in The Hague, which followed a rip deal of 1400 kilos in Antwerp at the end of August 2024, similar screenshots repeatedly appeared. According to the Public Prosecution Service, these screenshots were used to trace addresses where the crimes were to take place.
Leaked to Third Parties
Investigations by the National Criminal Investigation Department led to the account of the municipal official who worked in Supervision and Enforcement. On October 17, 2024, she was arrested after shots were fired at a residential address of a license plate she had queried with a Kalashnikov. The woman spent several months in pre-trial detention.
Investigations by the National Criminal Investigation Department have revealed that the suspect unlawfully accessed data in various government systems to which she had access at least 101 times between November 2023 and October 2024. In several cases, it was established that this information was leaked to unauthorized third parties, including relatives of the suspect and even so-called information brokers in the criminal milieu.
Serious Consequences
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the personal data provided was used in serious criminal offenses, including a shooting at a residence in broad daylight. Tracking devices have been found under vehicles of employees of jewelers, and some have been robbed. These license plates were also queried by the suspect. The suspect is also said to have looked up license plates in an investigation into a fatal shooting incident in Amsterdam in which her son is a suspect. According to the Public Prosecution Service, her actions directly led to life-threatening situations and the violation of individuals privacy.
Abuse of Confidential Information
The now former municipal official is suspected of computer intrusion, violating her official secrecy, and accepting bribes. “The abuse of confidential government information and playing with the safety of citizens is particularly serious. This case undermines trust in our public institutions and can have far-reaching consequences for the affected victims,” said the public prosecutor.
She demanded a four-year prison sentence, one year of which is conditional. Additionally, she asked the court to impose a professional ban on the woman. If it is up to the public prosecutor, the suspect should not be allowed to work as a civil servant for five years.
The court will deliver its verdict in two weeks.
