The Public Prosecution Service (OM) demands 10 years of imprisonment and TBS with compulsory treatment against a 28-year-old man from Woerden. He is suspected of having stabbed and run over his girlfriends ex on January 1, 2025. “What should have been a beautiful start to the new year ended in a drama.”

It is New Years Eve when the suspect returns from the police station after a conflict with his stepson. On the way home, he receives a call from his girlfriend. She tells him that her ex is angrily waiting at the door to confront him about the conflict between the suspect and his son. The suspect runs home, enters through the back, and comes outside through the front door with his dog. During the struggle that ensues, the suspect is handed a knife by his 13-year-old stepdaughter, the daughter of the victim. With that knife, the victim is stabbed 16 times. When the victim collapses a little further away, that is no reason for the suspect to stop. He gets into a car, runs over the victim, and brings the vehicle to a stop on his body. Miraculously, the victim survives the incident.

“I Hope He Is Dead”

Many neighbors witness what is happening on the street. By coincidence, at the moment of the collision, a police helicopter flies by that captures the second act that the suspect is accused of. When officers arrive shortly after, they hear the suspect shouting multiple times, “I hope he is dead!” During the subsequent interrogation, the suspect confesses. He states that he acted to protect himself and his family. His actions would be the result of the threat that the victim has posed to his family for years.

Crossing Boundaries

Investigations show that the victim was standing at the door that night. However, witnesses state that he walks away before the suspect stabs him. “The danger had in that sense passed,” the prosecutor states in court. “Even when the victim staggered away bleeding and collapsed on the street, that was no reason for the suspect to stop. The suspect has gone way too far in the thought of protecting his family. By acting this way, he has crossed all boundaries.”

Disorders

In determining the sentence demand, the OM weighs that the suspect is considered to be diminished culpable after psychological examination. The OM demands a prison sentence of 10 years against the 28-year-old suspect from Woerden. Given the seriousness of the facts and the disorders identified in the suspect, the OM also deems TBS with compulsory treatment necessary. According to the OM, a return to society without treatment is not an option.

Role of the Stepdaughter

The OM suspects the 13-year-old stepdaughter of the suspect of handing the knife with which the suspect stabbed the victim. She is not suspected of complicity in the attempted manslaughter. For that reason, the OM requests the judge to acquit her for that part.
