The 39-year-old man who seriously injured a woman on June 14, 2024, and stabbed a friend shortly before was in a psychosis. This was stated by the Public Prosecution Service today during a hearing at the Amsterdam court. The woman who was stabbed in a bakery in Osdorp died two days later in the hospital from her injuries. The Public Prosecution Service today demanded a prison sentence of eight years and TBS with compulsory treatment for the man.
The man reportedly acted from a psychosis after consuming a large amount of cannabis and cocaine. Voices in his head ordered him to kill both his friend and the woman.
Luck
On the evening of June 14, 2024, the suspect was chilling with a friend in the suspects home when everything went completely wrong. The suspect walked to the kitchen, grabbed a knife there, and then stabbed his friend in the back of the neck. In the stairwell, he also stabbed the friend in the stomach when he tried to escape the suspects home. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the victims survival was not thanks to the suspect. It seems to have been a matter of luck that the victim is still alive, said the public prosecutor today at the hearing. It was the suspects intention to kill his friend, as the suspect himself stated.
I have stabbed
The suspect also admitted that shortly after the first stabbing incident, he stabbed a 46-year-old woman in the neck with a knife. The woman was unsuspectingly working with her partner in a bakery in Osdorp at the time. The suspects intention was that she should also die, he stated to the police. Immediately after the stabbing incidents, he went to the police station to surrender himself. In his first contact with the police, he said: You have to take me. I have stabbed. I need help. I am injured. I am going to hell. It is all wrong.
TBS measure
The suspect was examined by experts who concluded that clinical treatment is necessary to protect society. According to the experts, this can only be done through TBS with compulsory treatment. Without long-term and intensive treatment, the chance of recidivism is assessed as high by them. The Public Prosecution Service follows the advice of the reporters.
Although it is established that the suspect acted from a psychosis, the Public Prosecution Service reproaches the suspect that his drug use contributed to the development of that psychosis. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the suspect can therefore be held partially responsible for his actions and a prison sentence has also been demanded.
Safety in the neighborhood
Both stabbing incidents took place in the Wildeman neighborhood in Nieuw-West, an area known for decades as a problem neighborhood with high crime. These stabbing incidents have increased feelings of insecurity. Only after several neighborhood meetings, and after more information about the case became known, did calm return. A feeling of safety is not self-evident for everyone in Nieuw-West. From the National Program Together Nieuw-West, the police, the Public Prosecution Service, and other organizations work together to improve safety in the neighborhood and the future of the children growing up there.
Judgment December 18.
