A new speed camera along the Backer en Ruebweg (Northern Ring Road) is activated today. It is located at the intersection with the Veldsteen. Behavioral change among drivers is urgently needed at this junction. Many accidents currently occur, partly because a striking number of road users press their gas pedal too hard or run red lights. This must be addressed, says the Public Prosecution Service. Therefore, on Friday, December 5, a new speed camera will be activated, with a second following in 2026. The municipality of Breda, the police, and the Public Prosecution Service expect that drivers will adjust their driving behavior, making the intersection safer.

In recent years, dozens of accidents have occurred at this intersection, sometimes resulting in serious injuries. In many cases, risky behavior by drivers was the cause. The speed limit on the Backer en Ruebweg is 70 km/h, but many drivers exceed this significantly. Additionally, it appears that on this intersection with the Veldsteen, red light violations occur on average 200 times per day. Therefore, this new speed camera will monitor these two dangerous behaviors: those who speed or ignore a red traffic light will receive a fine. It is notable that at another intersection further along, the Backer en Rueblaan with Emerparklaan, far fewer accidents occur. Two speed cameras are already installed there. It seems that drivers have adjusted their behavior partly because of this.

Heavy Trucks and Cyclists

At the intersection of Backer en Ruebweg with Veldsteen, there is a lot of heavy truck traffic going to and from the industrial area. Additionally, many cyclists cross here who use one of the beautiful cycling routes through Breda. Every time a car or truck runs a red light, it creates a potentially dangerous situation for cyclists. That is why it is so important that all road users on Backer en Ruebweg obey traffic rules.

24 Hours a Day

It has been proven that a speed camera positively affects driving behavior and contributes to traffic safety. This new speed camera was installed last month and tested in the past period. From December 5, 2025, all offenders will receive a fine. In the coming year, a second speed camera will be placed at the intersection. The cameras operate 24 hours a day, and violations are immediately forwarded to the CJIB. After about three years, it will be assessed whether the traffic situation has improved. The Public Prosecution Service will then decide, after consultation with the police and municipality, whether enforcement with a speed camera remains necessary.
