The Public Prosecution Service today demanded community service sentences between 80 and 100 hours for five minors involved in the riots in Scheveningen. According to the OM, the youths committed open violence against the police.
On Thursday evening, May 1, a group of youths turned against the police in Scheveningen. The mobile unit intervened but was pelted with stones, bicycles, and glass. Many damages were also caused in the area, including to street furniture and property of entrepreneurs.
The suspects - aged 15, 16, and 17 at the time - were part of that group. Footage from cameras on which they were recognized shows that they contributed to the violence. The public prosecutor held them partly responsible for the significant unrest that arose. The disturbances had a major impact on the mobile unit, but also social impact in The Hague and the country.
Community Service
The Public Prosecution Service demanded community service sentences between 80-100 hours. The juvenile court convicted four of the five suspects of open violence and imposed community service sentences of 40 to 50 hours. Consideration was given to the age and personal circumstances of the youths, but also to the seriousness and impact of the disturbances. One of the suspects was acquitted.
So far, five other suspects have been arrested for the riots in Scheveningen, all minors. Some of them are still awaiting a summons for the juvenile court. The investigation into the camera footage to recognize and apprehend more suspects is still ongoing. A total of 10 suspects have now been arrested in the investigation into the riots in Scheveningen.
