A 22-year-old man is suspected of committing a series of thefts and frauds. He posed as a police officer and persuaded people to hand over their jewelry and money. In the court in Maastricht, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) today demanded 4 years in prison, with a deduction for pre-trial detention, of which 1 year is conditional with special conditions.
Method
By pretending to be a police officer, he gained trust and persuaded the victims to hand over goods. Jewelry with not only monetary but also emotional value has thus disappeared.
Seriousness of the Facts
The OM holds the suspect accountable for the facts occurring at the victims homes, a place where they should feel safe.
Moreover, these facts are so serious because they have a disruptive effect on society. They undermine the trust that citizens have in our society, in our rule of law, and in the police that is supposed to protect them.
Sentence Demand
The OM demands 4 years in prison with a deduction for pre-trial detention, of which 1 year is conditional with special conditions.
The court will rule in two weeks.
