This afternoon, the public prosecutors demanded a prison sentence of thirteen years and TBS with compulsory treatment against a now 23-year-old man without a fixed residence who is suspected of murdering his 65-year-old father on March 29, 2024. The man is also suspected of a robbery at a gas station in Diemen and illegal possession of weapons.
On March 30, 2024, the lifeless body of the 65-year-old victim was found in his home in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. After the police studied, among other things, camera footage from the area around the victims home, the now 23-year-old son was arrested on June 4, 2024, on suspicion of involvement in his fathers death. When his DNA was added to the database, it appeared that the suspects DNA profile matched the DNA profile related to two other punishable offenses: weapon possession in February 2022 and an armed robbery at a gas station in Diemen on October 9, 2020.
Concrete slab
The suspect stated that on March 29, 2024, he threw a concrete slab through a window of the back door of his fathers house to enter. Indeed, a concrete slab with the suspects DNA was found in the house. The suspect confessed to stabbing his father to death. The suspect also confessed to the robbery at the gas station in Diemen.
Witness statements and communications between the suspect, his father, a friend of his father, and between his parents show suspicions of drug abuse and debts. The suspect and his father also reportedly had disputes about the suspects schooling. His father had found out that he was no longer attending school, while he was paying for his studies.
Murder
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) assumes murder because it was a deliberate, planned action that the suspect had been preparing since January 2024 when he had a dispute with his father. For example, he had bought cheap shoes before the murder that he could immediately discard after the murder to avoid leaving traces. On his phone, he had made a note of emoticons that seemed to give himself the green light to kill his father. When he left the house late that evening, he lied to his niece, with whom he was staying, saying he was going to a girlfriend. Apparently, his niece was not allowed to know he was going to his father. That whole late-night, hours-long walk could have made the suspect reconsider his decision.
The suspect stated that he was sexually abused by his father in his early childhood. The OM could not establish that this actually happened. However, if it had, the OM believes this would not constitute a ground for exclusion of criminal liability.
Prison sentence and TBS with compulsory treatment
All things considered, this afternoon the OM demanded a prison sentence of thirteen years and TBS with compulsory treatment on suspicion of the murder of his father, weapon possession, and the robbery at the gas station in Diemen. The public prosecutors stated in their indictment: “We consider mandatory treatment necessary, especially because of the murder. The feelings towards his father – anger, sadness, hurt, and disappointment – led the suspect to his horrible act. Based on the file, it can be established that these feelings had been present for a long time. Instead of discussing these feelings with his father or others, the suspect kept them to himself. Until he decided that his father had to die.”
