The prosecutor begins her indictment with a description of Jet, the 17-year-old girl who was almost home but never arrived. In a case like this, it revolves around the suspect and what he is accused of, but we are here because her life, the life of Jet, was ended by the actions of this suspect.
Jet.
Jet who was crazy about animals, especially horses
Jet who clearly had her goal of working in a hospital later in mind.
Jet who spent hours in her room making jewelry.
Jet who was always there for everyone.
Jet who knew better than her parents where everything was in her parents case.
Jet who had such an eye for detail that the smallest change in the smallest animal caught her attention.
Jet small in stature, but great in character.
Jet the very best friend of her sister Jolijn.
The prosecutor believes there is no debate that it was the suspect who robbed Jet of her life on February 21, 2024. The suspect admitted this in his first interrogation. But this case revolves around whether this is murder or manslaughter.
The investigation has provided a clear picture of how the suspect and Jet got to know each other in September 2023, but it has not clarified how the relationship they had should be described. They each had their own experience of it. On February 19, 2024, group conversations on Snapchat revealed that for Jet, the relationship with the suspect had been over for some time. Jet was said to have a new boyfriend. The prosecution concluded from the investigation that the relationship with Jet greatly preoccupied the suspect. On February 20, the suspect messaged his brother that he felt Jet no longer had respect for him. He felt betrayed and was angry. In a Snapchat message, the suspect told his brother: but go after her on Thursday as well, and make sure to do it well.
Investigations of the suspects phone revealed a picture of a man who had carefully prepared his actions. He spoke about the tools he needed to hit Jet, what clothes he would wear, and where he would wait for her. Everything was prepared down to the last detail.
The suspect stated that he wanted to scare Jet or give her a punch. When he saw her cycling, he suddenly became very angry, yelled at her, and stabbed her in the back. But this does not align with the plan that the suspect had. Part of the plan was that Jet would cycle by, and that is exactly what she did. Nothing more, nothing less. Nothing happened that could explain that intense emotional disturbance.
The suspect indicated that he had been in a dilemma all day about his plan. The prosecutor: He cannot explain why he needed to be unrecognizable to scare Jet, and he cannot explain why he took the largest knife from the cutlery drawer. The background of his actions was, according to the suspect, that they were going back to school the following week, and he did not want to be ridiculed by Jet.
Based on the facts - the suspect made a plan, the suspect executed that plan, the suspect acted methodically - the prosecutor concludes that there is only one conclusion: this is murder.
The suspect has been thoroughly examined during his extended observation in a Forensic Center.
The prosecutor does not discuss the expert report in detail. The suspect was adopted at age 4 and received a warm home and good upbringing from his adoptive family. But it is clear that the suspects first four years of life were extremely turbulent and that this caused a lack of attachment. According to experts, this poor foundation led to a deep-seated fear of abandonment, poor ability to regulate emotions, and a fragile self-image. The suspect has not wanted or been able to accept negative emotions, resulting in these emotions nesting in a subconscious layer of his personality.
The experts advise that the charges should be attributed to the suspect to a lesser extent. I adopt that conclusion, said the prosecutor.
On February 21 of last year, the suspect heartlessly ended Jets life. He deprived her of the most precious thing that exists, the right to life. Jet will never turn 18, she will never be able to help people in the hospital as she wanted, she will never ride horses again. She will never come home.
The suspect has created a void in Jets family. The family will have to go on with this enormous loss for the rest of their lives.
Given the seriousness of the crime and the irreparable consequences it has had, treatment alone is not enough. There must also be a punishment following what the prosecution calls a retribution for the fact that the suspect deprived Jet of the right to life.
The prosecutor demands a prison sentence of 12 years plus TBS with compulsory treatment for the murder of Jet.
