Today, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) holds the appeal hearing in the Yaros investigation. This criminal case concerns the carefully planned and skillfully executed armed robbery on May 19, 2021, of a cash transport, during which heavily armed suspects stole valuable precious metals. Several suspects have already been irrevocably convicted, one suspect was acquitted. Seven remaining suspects stand trial in appeal. Five were arrested in Broek in Waterland. Thanks to international cooperation between police and justice, the two suspects who escaped on May 19 were apprehended. The Public Prosecution Service demands an unconditional prison sentence of 18 years with deduction of pre-trial detention for all seven suspects. They are suspected of joint attempt of qualified manslaughter, joint threat, joint armed robbery, and joint arson of the three used getaway cars.
Excessive firearm violence
The robbery lasted only a few minutes. The subsequent flight to Broek in Waterland lasted longer, during which police officers literally feared for their lives due to the suspects excessive firearm violence. “The courage shown by the police officers on May 19, 2021, is unprecedented and deserves great respect. Whatever the legal outcome of this case, it is evident that every police officer acted heroically with one goal in mind: to arrest the suspects and prevent them from escaping with the loot. The impact of this case, due to the ruthless and violent actions of the suspects, is enormous. What the employees of a cash and valuables transport and a precious metals company in Amsterdam-Noord, the police, and the residents of the area around the robbery and in Broek and Waterland experienced that day is unfortunately not a sensational movie script, but the raw reality,” said the attorney general (public prosecutor in appeal).
Justice has perseverance and does not doubt that the remaining two suspects will also have to answer to the court at some point.
