The Public Prosecution Service demands a conviction against a 29-year-old man from Kapelle for threatening officers with a firearm. The prosecutor does not demand a penalty because the suspect is currently undergoing compulsory treatment in another case.
The incident took place on October 19, 2023. At that time, the suspect was residing in a compulsory treatment department of a mental health clinic in Halsteren. After escaping from the facility, the man fled in his car.
Several officers initiated a pursuit at high speeds. A helicopter was also deployed. Two unmarked police cars followed the suspect from Etten-Leur to Hulten, where the three vehicles could not proceed on the Broekdijk due to concrete blocks blocking the road.
The suspect exited the vehicle, holding an object resembling a firearm in his right hand. He aimed the weapon at one of the police cars. The man climbed onto the hood of the vehicle, after which one of the officers fired from the car through the windshield. Even when the suspect ran away, the officer fired several shots.
With the assistance of the Special Intervention Service (DSI), the suspect – with injuries to his legs – was arrested in a nearby shed.
The court will issue its verdict in two weeks.
