The Public Prosecution Service Limburg today requested the court in Maastricht to suspend a 51-year-old suspect from the municipality of Horst aan de Maas - who is suspected of possessing and distributing child pornography - under a number of conditions from pre-trial detention.

The Limburg Court then decided during the session that the suspect may await the substantive handling of his criminal case in freedom. Thus, the court follows the position of the Public Prosecution Service.

For the Public Prosecution Service, it is essential that the suspension will only take effect when the suspect can actually be treated. The court also follows the Public Prosecution Service in that position.
The suspension will therefore only take effect at the moment when the treatment of the suspect can begin.

Where the Public Prosecution Service previously opposed a suspension during an earlier session, it now sees in a psychological report and subsequent probation report sufficient guarantees and frameworks to reduce the risk of reoffending to an acceptable level for society.

The criminal investigation in this case is still ongoing. When the substantive handling will take place is still unknown.
