The investigation into the death of Daniel van Vliet from Zierikzee found that exhuming his body provided no information indicating a criminal offense or involvement of third parties. The Public Prosecution Service has now decided to close the investigation due to lack of evidence of a crime.
On August 4, 2015, Daniels family reported him missing when he did not return home after visiting a café. Three days later, his body was found in the canal near the Nobelpoort in his hometown. The police investigation that was initiated did not indicate the possibility of a crime.
Ten years after his death, the case was reopened based on newly received information from a witness, and on September 24, 2025, Daniels body was exhumed. The police spoke with witnesses and also called on others to come forward if they had not already done so.
Both the witness interviews and the autopsy by the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) gave the Public Prosecution Service no reason to continue the investigation.
