A Syrian man suspected of planning a terrorist attack was arrested on Friday, November 28, in Dronten. Information from the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) revealed that the suspect adheres to jihadist ideology and was seeking a firearm to carry out an attack. No specific target had been identified yet.
The 33-year-old man had been staying since last summer in a reception center in Dronten, Flevoland, where he was also arrested. The suspect appeared before an examining magistrate on Tuesday, December 16. The court decided that the man will remain in custody for 90 days, suspected of preparing terrorist crimes.
Since his arrest, the suspect has been under restrictions, meaning he may only contact his lawyer. These restrictions remain in place after the examining magistrate hearing. The criminal investigation is being conducted by the National Detection and Intervention Unit (LO) of the police, under the leadership of the National Public Prosecutors Office (OM).
