On Thursday, December 18, 2025, police in Vlissingen arrested a 29-year-old Syrian who possibly planned a terrorist attack in Europe and was a member of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS).
Information from the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) revealed that the man had made statements on social media about carrying out a terrorist attack in Europe around the Christmas holidays. No specific target was mentioned. Based on this information, the man was arrested the same day at his home in Vlissingen. The police seized data carriers for further investigation.
The man appeared today before a council chamber of the Rotterdam Court. It was decided that the man will remain in custody for at least 30 more days on suspicion of preparing a terrorist offense and participating in the terrorist organization IS.
Since his arrest, the suspect has been under restrictions, meaning he may only have contact with his lawyer. The criminal investigation is being conducted by the National Detection and Intervention Unit (LO) of the police, under the leadership of the National Public Prosecutors Office (OM).
