The Threatened Politicians Team of the The Hague Police Unit arrested a 25-year-old man from Alphen aan den Rijn on Wednesday. In a video widely shared on social media these days, he says he would go to the House of Representatives with an axe and that heads will roll.

The suspect made his statement in a TikTok livestream. When asked who he would start with, the suspect replied maybe with Geertje. The clip was posted on social media and has been widely shared in recent days.

The Public Prosecution Service has classified the video as a criminal threat against members of the House of Representatives, particularly Geert Wilders. The suspect has been identified and was arrested on Wednesday for questioning. Afterwards, he may await the prosecution decision of the Public Prosecution Service while free.

Foundation of democracy

Politicians must be able to do their work unhindered and without restraint. This is the basis for the proper functioning of our democracy. Reports and complaints of threats therefore receive special attention from the police and the Public Prosecution Service. The Threatened Politicians Team of the The Hague Police Unit exists to facilitate reporting or filing complaints for national politicians. The team is led by the Public Prosecution Service in The Hague, which is responsible for assessing reports and deciding on prosecution of suspects.

The Public Prosecution Service publishes the annual number of reports and the number of threats classified as criminal. In 2024, 363 reports were made, and in 235 cases the PPS judged it to be a criminal threat. Figures for 2025 are not yet known.
