The 29-year-old man from Groningen, suspected of having killed his mother on September 7, 2025, with multiple stab wounds, will remain in custody longer. This was decided by the court this afternoon after a first public hearing.

The Public Prosecution Service suspects the man of murder or manslaughter. The suspect has been interrogated multiple times since his arrest. During his last interrogation, the suspect confessed that he was the one who, on April 1, 2025, in the early morning near Cascadeplein in Groningen, stabbed a completely random victim in the neck. The victim in this case as well as the relatives of the deceased victim have recently been informed of this development.

After the forensic investigation and the final investigative actions have been completed, the final official report will be drawn up. The investigation into the stabbing incident is also in a concluding phase. This fact will also be included in the substantive handling of the violent crime.

The suspect is admitted to the Pieter Baan Center, where research is conducted into the person of the suspect.

A next pro forma hearing is scheduled for March 10. The Public Prosecution Service expects to be able to schedule the substantive hearing around mid-2026.
