The police have arrested a suspect for the rape of a minor girl in Bodegraven in 1990. The now 58-year-old suspect from the municipality of Altena (North Brabant) was taken into custody by the examining magistrate on Friday.
On March 30, 1990, a man rang the doorbell of a minor girl, who was home alone at the time. He entered the house under false pretenses, threatened multiple times that he would stab the victim with a knife, and raped her. The case could not be solved at the time, but DNA from the perpetrator was secured.
After the United Kingdom joined the Prüm Convention, which regulates international exchange between DNA databases, a possible match was found between a DNA trace in an English case from 2003 and the Dutch case. After additional investigation, the suspect was arrested on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.
Confession Statement
The suspect made a confession statement after his arrest, and a rapid investigation has shown that his DNA indeed matches the perpetrator traces. The victim has been informed about this by the police.
Because prohibited weapons and ammunition were found during the search of the suspects home, the suspect was presented to the examining magistrate on suspicion of both rape and illegal possession of weapons. The examining magistrate has extended his pre-trial detention by 14 days.
