On the night of Friday, July 18, 2025, to Saturday, July 19, 2025, a deadly shooting incident occurred in Coevorden. A 21-year-old man from Emmen lost his life. The investigation reveals that at that time, or shortly before, there may have also been an (attempted) unlawful deprivation of liberty involving an 18-year-old resident of the municipality of Emmen. This 18-year-old person was arrested on site shortly after the deadly shooting incident. He has been released, but remains a suspect.
In the context of the (attempted) unlawful deprivation of liberty of the 18-year-old suspect, a 31-year-old man from Emmen and a 33-year-old man from Coevorden were previously arrested. The 31-year-old man was released by the examining magistrate. On July 29, the court decided that the 33-year-old suspect would remain in pre-trial detention for 90 days. On July 21, a 16-year-old person from the municipality of Emmen was arrested for involvement in the deadly shooting incident. On July 23, a 23-year-old man from Schoonebeek was also arrested, also for involvement in the deadly shooting incident. They are accused of murder of the 21-year-old victim, as well as attempted murder of the aforementioned 18-year-old, 31-year-old, and 33-year-old suspects for having fired multiple times.
The court has determined today that both will remain in custody for 90 days. The police investigation is still ongoing and focuses, among other things, on the (suspected) interrelation between the (attempted) unlawful deprivation of liberty and the shooting incident. The circumstances and role of the victim in this whole affair are also being further investigated.
