Three suspects have been arrested for involvement in the Malieveld riots on September 20. The three men turned themselves in after their photos were shown last week on crime investigation programs.
The suspects are a 22-year-old man from Zoetermeer, a 23-year-old man from Waddinxveen, and a 50-year-old man from Schiedam. The Zoetermeer man turned himself in on Monday at the police station and was arrested. He is suspected of public violence, including against the police car that was set on fire, from which he allegedly kicked off a mirror. On Thursday, the suspect will be brought before the examining magistrate, who will decide whether he remains in pre-trial detention.
The man from Waddinxveen turned himself in on Tuesday and was arrested for questioning. Afterwards, considering his personal circumstances, he was released pending a prosecution decision by the public prosecutor. The suspect is suspected of public violence and arson.
The 50-year-old suspect from Schiedam turned himself in on Tuesday and was then arrested. He is suspected, among other things, of damaging the fence at the deer park near the Malieveld, the poles of which were used in violence against the police.
The investigation is still ongoing. The Public Prosecution Service expects to make more arrests in the future.
Large-scale riots
On Saturday, September 20, a large group of people chose to fight the police around a demonstration. Stones were thrown, fires were set, and damage was caused. The police were attacked, as were journalists, and later damage was caused in the city center, including at the D66 party office and the Binnenhof.
The police immediately started a criminal investigation led by the Public Prosecution Service. The investigation primarily focuses on mapping the violence committed and identifying the perpetrators.
New photos released
The police now have over 1700 hours of footage. Dozens of rioters have already been identified, whose identities the police want to determine, if necessary with public assistance. Last week, photos of six people who committed violence were shown for the first time. Some have turned themselves in; for others, good tips have been received and are being investigated.
On Tuesday evening, photos of perpetrators will again be shown on Opsporing Verzocht and Team West. The police then call on the public to help identify five individuals.
