The suspect of the murder of a 17-year-old young woman and a serious sexual offense at the Weesperzijde will remain in custody longer. The council chamber of the Amsterdam court has extended the provisional detention by ninety days. The court has just announced this. Investigations are ongoing, and the restrictions have not yet been lifted.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been definitively established. He has declared who he is, and that statement appears consistent with the information he provided in the asylum procedure. However, he does not possess any documents. Therefore, his statement cannot be verified at this moment. Additional information has been requested from several countries, including Nigeria. This process takes time, and the Public Prosecution Service is still awaiting a response.
Reports and tips
DNA from the suspect and his fingerprints have now been checked in the Dutch and European databases. The suspect does not appear in these databases. After the press conference on Friday, August 22, about 300 reports were received by the police. Processing and verification of these reports takes considerable time. Due to the interests of the investigation, no statements can yet be made about the nature of the reports.
Pro forma hearing
Investigations are ongoing. The suspect is still under full restrictions. In three months, a public pro forma hearing will be held at the Amsterdam court where the Public Prosecution Service will provide an update on the investigations. The court will then make a decision on possible research requests and on a potential extension of the provisional detention if a request for suspension or lifting is submitted.
