How densely built is a neighborhood compared to another neighborhood? Is there a connection between, for example, livability or mobility and density? Does an increase in functional mixing affect property value? The GIS dataset RUDIFUN developed by the PBL can be helpful for such questions. From now on, you can search for densities, the degree of functional mixing, and other spatial indicators about the urban fabric on the map itself. The newly added storymap also explains the possibilities of RUDIFUN step by step.
The RUDIFUN dataset is the dataset from the PBL that stands for Spatial Densities and Functional Mixing in the Netherlands. A high building density allows the landscape around cities and villages to remain undeveloped and ensures that distances within cities are relatively short. This creates favorable conditions for active mobility and economic interaction. However, high densities are also associated with livability issues and congestion. Knowledge about spatial densities is therefore very relevant for area development. The RUDIFUN dataset can assist in analyzing densities and densification issues.
The PBL has created this GIS dataset that visualizes the current spatial density for the whole of the Netherlands and also the increase or decrease thereof. Area developers, designers, and researchers can gain insight into the urban fabric with this dataset. They can also monitor recent changes, compare pieces of the city, and start working on densification.
The dataset is widely used by municipalities, provinces, consultancy firms, and universities as an empirical basis for design and research into urban fabric. This dataset is now also available in an online viewer.
With this, you can see what the Floor Space Index (FSI) or the degree of functional mixing (MXI) is at multiple scale levels.
In this storymap, we explain the possibilities of RUDIFUN.
