Last September, the victim had an appointment with a man. They met in the evening at the victims home in Amsterdam-Zuid. While sitting together on the couch, the doorbell rang. At the moment the victim opened the front door, he was pushed hard inside by two unknown persons. But it was the man who was already in the house who suddenly grabbed a knife, held it to the victims throat, and then dragged him through the hallway. The victim received hard blows and kicks. Several times, there were loud calls to strangle the victim. After a few minutes, the men fled the house, leaving the victim gasping for air.
We strongly suspect that the fact that the victim is a trans person was a motive for this incident. In the Netherlands, you are allowed to be who you are and love who you want. If there is clear evidence that discrimination played a role, it can even result in a harsher sentence for a suspect.
In recent months, the detectives have conducted extensive investigations, and today an 18-year-old man from Rotterdam was arrested on suspicion of attempted manslaughter.
Being assaulted, discriminated against, insulted, or threatened based on your background, orientation, faith, or gender is something that is always unacceptable, intolerable, and not permitted in the Netherlands. Therefore, the police also call on everyone to report if they have become a victim of such an incident.
