The boy was caught while setting off illegal fireworks. Enforcers stopped him, after which the police confiscated the fireworks. The suspect is being interrogated and will later have to account for himself before the examining magistrate. The boys home was searched; no fireworks were found there.
Warning letter
Following this incident, several parents and guardians of youths possibly involved in the nuisance received a letter from the police and the municipality. In this letter, they are reminded of their responsibility and the possible consequences of their childrens behavior. The nuisance consists of noise disturbance, vandalism, and the use of (illegal) fireworks. Future offenders can also expect such a warning letter.
Damage will be claimed from the perpetrator
The police and enforcement are closely monitoring the situation regarding nuisance and fireworks in Schouwen-Duiveland. Those who cause damage will pay the bill themselves. If the perpetrator is a minor, parents or guardians can be held liable, including for the costs incurred by government services.
Illegal fireworks have serious consequences
Such incidents not only cause nuisance but also feelings of insecurity among residents. “We want everyone to feel safe in our municipality. We do not accept nuisance and the use of (illegal) fireworks. Young people must be aware of the risks but also of the consequences of their behavior. For now but possibly also their future,” said Jack van der Hoek, mayor of Schouwen-Duiveland.
Possessing or storing illegal fireworks in a home is punishable. This can lead to a penalty or even closure of the home. Therefore, the police and municipality urgently call on parents and guardians to talk to their children and prevent recurrence. A criminal conviction can lead to a criminal record, which can have consequences for the future of the young person.
