When officers attempted to arrest a person for setting off and throwing heavy fireworks around 7:30 PM, the atmosphere near the stadium completely changed. A large group of rioters deliberately sought confrontation with the police. Stones, bottles, traffic signs, and heavy fireworks were thrown at officers. The Mobile Unit (ME) had to intervene to restore calm. The ME carried out several charges. We are aware that this can look intense, but the violence faced by the officers was enormous. 14 officers were injured, two of whom were bitten by a service dog and received medical treatment in the hospital. One officer was treated in the ambulance for an injury to the face. The others sustained minor injuries from blows and kicks they received and objects thrown at them.
Arrests
A total of 22 people (all men) were arrested for offenses including disturbances, obstruction, failure to comply with orders or requests, throwing heavy fireworks, and public violence. Four men are still in custody, the rest were released late Sunday evening. A report will be drawn up against all of them. Additionally, it is being considered whether area bans can be imposed.
Investigation
The championship is a reason for celebration, and we as police want to provide space for that, but within the applicable rules. Unfortunately, a small group of rioters marred the celebration. We draw the line at committing criminal offenses and violence against police officers. We take a strict stance against that. An investigation has been launched into the violence from last night, in which we are identifying and bringing suspects into view. We certainly do not rule out further arrests.
If you have footage showing suspects and/or criminal offenses that you have not yet shared with the police, please do so! This can be done via the options below.
