In early August, the victim reported an assault. The victim saw that two men were placing slogans related to their sexuality in the vicinity of their home. When the suspects were confronted about this, the victim was assaulted by the men.

The victim filed a report, after which the detectives launched an investigation. A public prosecutor granted permission to arrest the suspects outside of the act. Consequently, the two suspects, aged 20 and 23 from The Hague, were arrested on Monday, September 29. The suspects were released with a restraining order and must soon account for their actions before the court.

Since July 1, 2025, Article 44bis of the Penal Code has come into effect. This article states that it is an aggravating factor when a crime is committed with a discriminatory aspect. This shows the legislators commitment to combating discrimination. This will also be taken into account in this case.

Discrimination
Discrimination comes in many forms, but ultimately it means the same thing: you are treated unequally based on personal characteristics that do not matter. This is prohibited according to Article 1 of the Constitution. Discrimination undermines the equality of people and can have a tremendous impact. We find discrimination unacceptable. Not only because it is punishable, but also because it undermines public order, livability, and the well-being of people.

To combat discrimination, it is essential that incidents are reported. Do not think that you must accept discrimination or that nothing will be done with your report. If you experience insults, threats, assaults, or other criminal matters related to your personal characteristics, always report it! In emergencies, always call 112. If it is not urgent, contact the police at 0900-8844 or the national discrimination reporting point at 0800-0880.
