At around 01:30 AM, the police received a report that several individuals in Loon op Zand were dealing with a drunk and aggressive man. When the police arrived on the scene, they saw the man driving away. Despite the officers signaling the driver to stop, he continued driving. The ensuing chase ran from Loon op Zand via Kasteellaan towards Waalwijk. The car ran several red lights and drove on the wrong side of the road. Speeds of up to 120 km/h were reached within the built-up area. Just as the pursuing officers considered abandoning the chase for safety reasons, they saw the suspect hit a raised median at the intersection of Mozartlaan / St. Antoniusstraat in Waalwijk and lose control of the steering wheel. The car then hit two trees and a parked car at high speed before flipping over. The suspect (25) was injured but responsive when pulled from the car and arrested. He then refused to cooperate with a breath and/or blood test. A report was filed against him for all committed offenses.
