It is a criminal offense to threaten with violence, manslaughter, but also to threaten with assault, rape, or arson. The form in which the threat occurs is not important. A text message, an email, a response via social media, or verbally; all are equally punishable. Even expressing threats via anonymous social media accounts does not mean you can get away with it.
