Between April 1, 2024, and April 1, 2025, the number of offenders decreased from 371 to 285. This group – drivers who have been caught multiple times for traffic offenses – poses an increased risk on the road. Fewer of these hard-headed drivers means more safety on the road.
Extra Attention
Of the drivers contacted in the first year, 35 individuals showed little to no change in their driving behavior. They received four or more fines again and therefore remain linked to the project this year as well. During traffic controls, extra attention will be given to this group.
Behavior and Awareness
The project On the Radar was created to increase traffic safety and reduce the number of traffic victims. Research shows that drivers who frequently commit traffic offenses have a significantly higher chance of being involved in an accident. By personally approaching these drivers with an awareness letter, the Traffic Team of the Limburg unit aims to encourage them to change their behavior.
Collaboration
Also, in the coming year, collaboration with partners will be incredibly important. The police of the Limburg unit not only works closely with other units but also, for example, with the Royal Marechaussee. Almost every unit has started with the On the Radar project or is preparing for its implementation. A great example of national collaboration is a traffic control in The Hague, where a Limburg participant in the project was checked because he was On the Radar.
The project demonstrates that targeted awareness combined with enforcement actually leads to safer traffic behavior. The (traffic) police continue to work to further develop this approach.
