Fake neighborhood officers are scammers posing as police officers. The suspects call older people and pretend to be neighborhood officers. Sometimes they also use the name of the actual neighborhood officer.
The fake neighborhood officers ask questions about valuable items, money, or bank cards and offer to keep those items safe. Afterward, people indeed come to the door claiming to be from the police and representing the neighborhood officer to collect valuables for safekeeping. Once inside, they strike. They keep the victim talking and explain why it is best to hand over their valuables. Before these victims realize that they are not dealing with real officers, the fake neighborhood officers are already gone, usually with the victims belongings under their arm.
The police never act this way. We do not call you about your possessions and do not take your items for safekeeping. When we come to the door in uniform, we identify ourselves if you ask. When we come to the door in civilian clothes, we identify ourselves without being asked.
If you receive such calls and do not trust them, call the real police at 0900-8844.
