An 84-year-old woman from Kerkdriel received a call on the evening of Sunday, November 2, from someone pretending to be a police officer. The story was that plainclothes officers would come to her door as a precaution because there were criminals in the neighborhood. The woman did not trust it and called 112 to verify if she was really speaking to the police.
The police arrived and monitored the house. Shortly after, the fake officer appeared at the woman’s door and was immediately arrested. Nearby, a vehicle with two other individuals was found. They were also arrested as suspects and taken to the station. The suspects include a minor boy, a 21-year-old man from Amsterdam, and a 20-year-old man from Purmerend. The three fake officers are being interrogated and are currently in custody. The investigation into their involvement is ongoing.
Do not let them in, no matter what they claim
Scam tricks are excuses criminals use to deceive people, often successfully. They call, come to the door, or approach people on the street with a convincing story. However, a real police officer or bank employee will never call or come to your door to collect jewelry, money, or a bank card. The police advise always calling 112 if you receive a call from a (suspected) scammer or if a (suspected) scammer is at your door. The police can then verify if it is a scam. Earlier this year, the police started a collaboration with Omroep MAX to warn elderly people about fake officers: “Is it a fake officer, or is it okay? Check via 112!”
