The incidents took place during the night of December 31, 2025, to January 1, 2026. At a hospitality venue on Hoofdstraat, a firework bomb was detonated against the facade of the building. The explosion damaged both the facade and the interior of the building. Above the venue is a residence; the arson created danger for the surroundings.
Vandalism
Additionally, multiple acts of vandalism occurred the same night at the parking lots at Hofland and Formanjestrjitte. Among others, two underground containers, the canopy of shopping carts at a supermarket, a barrier gate, and a charging station were damaged.
Investigation
The police started an extensive investigation. Many camera images were secured and several witnesses were heard. Valuable information also came in via Crime Stoppers and following a witness appeal. Based on this information, three suspects were arrested today on suspicion of arson and vandalism. These include a minor boy from Gorredijk, a minor boy from the municipality of Opsterland, and a 23-year-old man from Beetsterzwaag. The investigation is still ongoing. The police do not rule out more arrests.

Response from the municipality of Opsterland
Mayor Andries Bouwman: “We do not tolerate that so much vandalism and violence occurred in Gorredijk during New Years Eve. The damage is significant and brings considerable costs and efforts for the community. Therefore, we are glad that the police have already made the first arrests thanks to careful action. We will seek to recover the damage from those responsible as much as possible.”
