The Flevoland detective unit started a large investigation some time ago into credit card fraud based on dozens of reports of scams. Tens of thousands of euros in damages resulted from these scams. A 35-year-old man and a 24-year-old man, both from Amsterdam, were arrested on suspicion of credit card fraud. The police also seized dozens of designer clothing items and dozens of digital data carriers.

Credit Card Fraud

Victims were scammed by a fake email (phishing email) supposedly from ICS. Phishing is a form of internet fraud where criminals try to obtain confidential information through fake websites of banks or online stores. With this obtained information, fraudsters can log in to the real website and make payments in your name. If you receive a request to fill in your details, always be extra alert! If you do not trust it, first call your bank or the relevant institution before entering your information.

What can you do to avoid becoming a victim?

Recognizing fake emails:

  • The email is often not personal and starts with dear customer or dear sir/madam.
  • It asks you to take quick action.
  • If you do not respond immediately, threats are often made, such as blocking your credit card.
  • The email contains a link to a fake website.
  • Your mail provider or spam filter often already marks the email as spam.

What to do if you clicked on the link in the fake message:

  1. Always contact the ICS Service Desk.
  2. They will assist you further and assess the seriousness of the situation.

Have you become a victim?

If you have become a victim, do not be ashamed and report it. This is in your own interest and that of your fellow victims. Your report can contribute to a harsher sentence if the investigation leads to the arrest of a suspect.
