The men were arrested as part of a long-running investigation into a criminal drug organization. At various times and locations, five suspects had previously been arrested. One of them was arrested in June in Spain and is still awaiting extradition to the Netherlands.
The three men were released after questioning during the week and will later have to answer to the court.
Consequences and Dangers of Drug Trafficking
This criminal organization is an example of undermining, organized crime in the Netherlands. Criminal organizations often have a strong hierarchy and a clear division of tasks. Drug trafficking deteriorates the living environment. It is accompanied by violence and extortion. The police also see that criminals entice vulnerable youth to participate. They often start with small, executing tasks and then grow into more leading positions. Young people are attracted to the quick money and status that come with this world.
Jarl Ampting from Basisteam De Waarden has previously spoken about the approach to young recruits in drug crime: We want to prevent young people from being sucked into this world of serious crime. Young people are not aware of the dangers, for themselves and their surroundings. Moreover, it is difficult to leave this world of power and violence once you are inside. You come into contact with the police and justice and end up in prison, or become a victim of violence.
