An 88-year-old victim was contacted by phone on Wednesday evening. There was said to be something wrong with the mans bank account, from which money was attempted to be withdrawn. The victim was pressured, as is often the case in such matters, and under the impression that he was genuinely dealing with the bank, provided his PIN and bank card. Such cases are referred to as bank helpdesk fraud and are regularly seen by the police.
Five Arrests
With the stolen bank card, a large sum of money was withdrawn, but that money was returned just as quickly. Thanks to swift police work, a 24-year-old man from Almere was first arrested in Oldenzaal. The stolen bank card was found with him. Shortly thereafter, two suspected accomplices were found in a vehicle in Almelo. They were a 22-year-old man from Almere and a 23-year-old man from Diemen. They were also arrested.
Just over the German border at De Lutte, the operation was complete. Two more suspects were stopped in a vehicle, and a large sum of cash was found with them. Presumably the withdrawn amount. These two suspects were arrested by the German police. They are a 22-year-old man from Amsterdam and a 23-year-old man from Sassenheim.
Enormous Impact
Cases like these have a huge impact on victims. The five suspects are still in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
Fraudsters often appear trustworthy and pose as employees of a reliable institution, such as the bank, but sometimes also the police. However, a real officer or bank employee will never call or come to the door to collect jewelry, money, or a bank card. The police advise always to call 112 if an appointment has been made by a (suspected) fraudster to come by or if a (suspected) fraudster is at the door. Are you a victim? There’s nothing to be ashamed of. Always report to the police.
