The police tracked down the suspect through multiple reports from victims spread across the country. Several individuals were called the day before the delivery of garden furniture, being informed that the delivery services card machine was broken. They were then asked to transfer the purchase amount digitally in advance. However, the amount did not reach the company where they made their purchase, but went to the account number of third parties who were presumably hired by the suspect.
Marketplace Fraud
Additionally, several people fell victim to marketplace fraud, where they often purchased more expensive goods that were never delivered. The 25-year-old resident of Assen is also suspected of calling victims and posing as a bank helpdesk employee to obtain their bank card and PIN, thus stealing money from them. Investigations into these various forms of fraud converged when similarities emerged in the different cases, all pointing to the involvement of the 25-year-old Assenaar. Since the first report came from Harderwijk, the investigation was taken up by Basisteam Veluwe-West.
Two Arrests
The 25-year-old suspect was arrested on the morning of July 15. A 21-year-old man (also from Assen) was also arrested, suspected of withdrawing money with a stolen bank card. Both suspects are currently still in custody.
Refined Fraud Techniques
Both so-called bank employees and fake police officers operate in an organized manner and use refined techniques. They call elderly victims and warn them that there is a threat of a burglary or report that there are urgent concerns about their bank account. By posing as an officer or bank employee, they gain trust. In this capacity, valuable items or bank cards are often collected from the victim. In reality, criminals make off with the loot.
On the police website, there is a special theme page about scam techniques, how to prevent them, and what to do if you unexpectedly become a victim. With this, the police aim to make people more alert to the risks that can lead to theft through scams. Additionally, the page contains tips for elderly individuals to enhance their own safety. The page can be found via this link.
