On July 9, 2024, two train cleaners at the train staging area near Utrecht Central fell ill. Both were taken to the hospital, where one of them died a day later. It was established that after their shift, they drank from a bottle containing liquid MDMA. A similar incident occurred on December 21, 2024, in Capelle aan den IJssel, where a 46-year-old man at the time fell ill in a house after consuming a drink. The victim was taken to the hospital. A family member became suspicious and contacted the Rotterdam police, who started an investigation. This investigation revealed that the man had consumed liquid MDMA, resulting in severe permanent injury.
Joint investigation
The investigative teams of the police units of Central Netherlands and Rotterdam conducted a joint investigation into both incidents. This led to the identification of four suspects from Rotterdam and Capelle aan den IJssel who were arrested today. One of them is the man previously arrested in this investigation on September 4, 2024. He had voluntarily reported himself following a broadcast of Opsporing Gezocht. Searches were conducted in two homes. The four men are detained for questioning.
