The minor boy was sitting on a bench around 7:30 PM on Van Haestrechtstraat with a friend when he was approached by the suspect. The suspect arrived on a fatbike, started talking to the two boys, and eventually grabbed the phone from the minor victims hand. He asked for the code, but when he did not receive it, he hit the boy in the face. The boy sought help at a nearby house and the police were called. The friend tried to chase the man, but the suspect managed to escape.
Arrest
Thanks to the location of the stolen phone, it quickly became clear where the suspect could be found. When officers went to Kastanjestraat in Waalwijk, they saw two men standing by a fatbike. One of them matched the description given by the boys. When the officers arrived, the suspect immediately became aggressive and started swearing. The suspect approached the officers and one of them drew a stun gun. The 34-year-old suspect, with no known residence or place of stay, seemed to comply, so the stun gun did not need to be used. However, the situation changed, and pepper spray was ultimately used to handcuff the suspect. He was eventually taken to the police cell amid much swearing from his side. The phone was returned to the victim.
After checking, it appeared that the man also had an outstanding prison sentence.
