Following a report, the Administrative Intervention Team (police and municipal supervisors) tracked down a possible online seller of illegal cigarettes. Together, they decided to conduct a check at the sellers home address. In the house, in the B-neighborhood of Reeshof, the inspectors ultimately found 54 cartons of cigarettes. The cigarettes came from abroad and were not provided with excise stamps.
After consulting with Customs, the police seized the cigarettes. Customs is conducting further investigation into the cigarettes and excise duty evasion. The seller is likely to receive a reassessment and/or a fine.
Reporting helps!
Addressing illegal, criminal, or suspicious activities cannot be done by governments alone. It is important for citizens to report any suspicions. This can ensure that victims receive help and support, and suspects are tracked down.
Reports can be made to the police (emergency 112, otherwise 0900-8844) or to the municipality. It can also be done at Meld Misdaad Anoniem, a foundation that is independent of the police, via 0800-7000 or online at www.meldmisdaadanoniem.nl. In this way, we work together for a better and safer living, working, and living environment.
