On Wednesday evening, a demonstration took place at the city hall in Rotterdam. Many demonstrators left around 7:30 PM, the time agreed upon for the demonstration to end. Dozens of demonstrators did not adhere to the pre-established frameworks of the demonstration. The mayor therefore decided to end the demonstration at 8:00 PM. The police subsequently ordered these individuals multiple times to leave the location. Anyone who did not comply was arrested. They will be presented to the duty officer as soon as possible.
The police assist in organizing demonstrations at the request of the mayor to ensure safety for demonstrators and the surrounding area. Therefore, we are visibly present and in contact with the demonstrators. This way, we keep a finger on the pulse. Our actions aim to de-escalate any tensions, should it be necessary. We act when criminal offenses are committed, agreements are not followed or the health of demonstrators or bystanders is endangered. We strive to maintain a balance between freedom and safety at every demonstration. If demonstrators do not follow the rules, they are initially warned by the organization and by the police. If the demonstrators do not listen, we order them on behalf of the mayor to leave. If they do not comply, the mayor can dissolve the demonstration. It is then up to the police to execute this decision of the mayor. If we give instructions to the public and they do not comply, this can lead to criminal prosecution. |
