On Sunday, May 18, there was a celebration in Eindhoven; PSV celebrated the championship! Unfortunately, this mostly festive day was marred by a period of intense disturbances on Vonderweg, in the immediate vicinity of the football stadium. In the subsequent investigation, many hours of camera footage were reviewed and analyzed. Thus, various suspects came into view.
Arrests
Today, Tuesday, August 26, eight new suspects were arrested. Earlier, we had already arrested nine others. The suspects arrested today are seven men and one woman. The oldest suspect is 53 years old, the youngest is 17. They come from Eindhoven, Nuenen, Helmond, Valkenswaard, and Heeze.
All suspects had already been identified in the investigation. Five of them because their images were shown in the media. First unrecognizable and ultimately recognizable for two suspects. Today, all eight suspects were invited to report to the police station. They all complied. At the station, they were arrested and interrogated. Afterward, they were sent home. Ultimately, the Public Prosecution Service will make a decision regarding their further prosecution.
Area Ban
The suspects are not only prosecuted criminally but also receive a proposed administrative measure. This means that identified suspects will receive a letter from the mayor stating that he intends to impose an area ban for a maximum duration of two years. They have two weeks to respond to this, after which the decision will be made. This means they are not allowed to be within a designated area around the football stadium during that period. If they do, they can be arrested.
Investigation Continues
We do not accept such misconduct as occurred on that fateful Sunday. Such disturbances not only impact police officers but also visitors and passersby who want to enjoy a celebration as it should be. Todays arrests are a beginning. We do not rule out that more will follow.
Safe Football
Football is part of Eindhoven and is part of a vibrant city. The matches of the professional football organizations generally bring a lot of joy to residents, visitors, and entrepreneurs, but they are sometimes accompanied by disturbances and (other) forms of insecurity.
Eindhoven strives for Safe and Hospitable Football. This means that football is accessible and everyone feels welcome in and around the stadium. Individuals who commit misconduct are punished and excluded. All partners, together with the supporters, are committed to combating violations of (legal) order. If incidents occur despite this, the perpetrators will face the consequences. A sporting experience should not involve (large-scale) police intervention. Football should be a celebration. Also in the new season that is approaching.
