A 21-year-old man from Enschede was reportedly driving a car without a drivers license. The man had previously stated that he would not comply with stop signs given by the police.

He was spotted on Friday morning, August 15, on the Egelantier in Haaksbergen. The street was blocked by several police vehicles to force him to stop. The 21-year-old driver then drove at high speed over the sidewalk and the adjacent green strip and fled. In the process, he hit a police officer who was standing on the green strip. The police officer was treated for arm injuries in the hospital. He has since filed a report of (attempted) serious assault.

No Pursuit for Safety

Because the man is known as a reckless driver and would not stop at police instructions, it was decided for the safety of other road users not to pursue him. He was later apprehended outside of immediate action at the request of the Public Prosecutor by members of the Support Group. The man is detained in the police detention center in Borne.

Violence Against Police Officers is Unacceptable!

The police find aggression and violence against their employees unacceptable. Police officers have a responsible role in society and must be able to do their work without being hindered. With mutual respect. Aggression or violence, in any form, against employees will not be tolerated!
