During these two days, about 160 bicycles, electric bikes, fatbikes, and mopeds were inspected. In total, 110 fines were issued. Including:

  • 17 times for speeding modifications
  • 19 times for malfunctioning brakes
  • 31 times for no lighting
  • 2 times for using a throttle to go faster than 6 kilometers per hour
  • 16 times for holding a phone while riding

Alderman Mario Hegger was present at the inspection on Wednesday: ‘Because traffic safety concerns us all, our Enforcement team regularly conducts checks together with the police. Everyone wants to be safe on the streets. Let’s work together to ensure a safe traffic environment by respecting each other and following traffic rules. This is not only pleasant for yourself but also for others. Check if your bike is well-lit and wear a helmet where required. Adhere to the allowed speed; modified e-bikes and fatbikes are not permitted.’

Light on in the dark

Without lighting, a cyclist is hardly visible in the dark. In rain or when car windows are fogged up, the risk increases even more. That is why good lighting is very important. A lamp may not work. An extra set of lights in your bag not only prevents a €75 fine but also contributes to traffic safety.

It can go fast

Modifying an electric bike is not allowed. Such a bike is not designed for that. Avoid a fine of a few hundred euros, the bike can be confiscated, and the rider is not insured. Falling at high speed without a helmet can have serious consequences.

Tips for parents

Traffic officer Purmerend Arjan: ‘Does your child cycle to school, training, or work? Then you want your child to come home safely. Explain that they should pay close attention, especially at busy spots. Check if the bike lights work. Tell them to keep their eyes on the road and not on their phone.
Does your child have an e-bike? Then check if it has been modified.’

How to see if an e-bike is modified

  • On the fatbike there is a plate showing the maximum wattage. It may not be higher than 250 watts.
  • Some fatbikes have a throttle. This may only provide gas up to 6 kilometers per hour.
  • Modification kits are also sold online. These are boxes with wiring found on the bike.
  • Often e-bikes are modified by connecting the bike’s display to an app. This allows the 25 km/h speed lock to be easily turned on and off.
