During the Feyenoord – Sturm Graz match, the 17-year-old from Barendrecht lit a flare and then threw it down into section S. A man was hit in the face by the burning flare. A second man, suddenly seeing something burning coming towards him, jumped away in panic and tore his calf muscle. A woman had the burning flare land on her jacket, damaging it and singeing her hair.
Caught in the act
The entire incident was caught on camera and the description was passed on to officers in the stadium. The suspect fled but was caught in the act after a short chase inside the stadium. After questioning, he spent one night at the police station. The next day, he was released with a summons, meaning he must appear in court at a later date.
Danger
A flare (Bengal fire) in a stadium is extremely dangerous due to the very high temperatures. They can reach over 1000 degrees Celsius, burn through everything, and do not extinguish quickly. This can cause severe burns and fire hazards, especially in dense crowds. Additionally, flares produce toxic smoke, leading to respiratory problems for bystanders.
