On Sunday, May 18, it was a celebration in Eindhoven; PSV celebrated the championship! Unfortunately, this mostly festive day was marred by a period of severe disturbances on Vonderweg, in the immediate vicinity of the football stadium. In the subsequent investigation, many hours of camera footage were reviewed and analyzed. Several suspects came into view. Rioters had already been arrested on August 5 and August 26.
Arrests
Today, Tuesday, October 28, nine new suspects were arrested. Previously, a total of seventeen suspects had already been arrested. The suspects arrested today are nine men. The oldest suspect is 60 years old, the youngest 16 years old. They come from Eindhoven, Rosmalen, Helmond, Veldhoven, Roosendaal, and Roggel.
All suspects had already been identified earlier in the investigation because their images were shown in the media. Initially, this was done unrecognizably and in several cases also recognizably after two weeks. Today, all nine suspects were invited to report to the police station. They all complied. At the station, they were arrested and questioned. Afterwards, they were released. Ultimately, the Public Prosecution Service will decide on their further prosecution.
A tenth suspect has also been identified. Due to circumstances, he could not be arrested today. He will report to the station at a later time.
Area Ban
The suspects are not only prosecuted criminally but also face a proposed administrative measure. This means that identified suspects will receive a letter from the mayor stating that he intends to impose an area ban for a certain period (max. two years). This is linked to an enforcement order to ensure compliance with the ban. They will have limited time to respond, after which the (new) interests will be weighed and the final decision made. If the area ban with the accompanying enforcement order is imposed, it means that they may not be within a designated area around the football stadium during the established period. If they do, they can be arrested and must pay the enforcement fine.
Safe Football
Football is part of Eindhoven and is part of a vibrant city. The matches of the professional football organizations usually bring much pleasure to residents, visitors, and entrepreneurs, but sometimes also involve disturbances and (other) forms of insecurity.
Eindhoven aims for ‘Safe and Hospitable Football’. This means that football is accessible and everyone feels welcome in and around the stadium. Individuals who engage in misconduct are punished and excluded. All partners, together with the supporters, work to prevent violations of (legal) order. If incidents nevertheless occur, the perpetrators face the consequences. A sporting experience should not involve (large-scale) police interventions. Football should be a celebration.
