Groups of demonstrators blocked the railway at multiple locations in (and around) the port of Rotterdam on Saturday morning. Some demonstrators also chained themselves to the tracks. Many trains run in the port, some of which carry hazardous materials. This can create life-threatening situations for demonstrators and port staff. Therefore, the mayor, on behalf of the Triangle, decided that demonstrating on the tracks is not allowed. Demonstrating is permitted, but not in a place where safety cannot be guaranteed.

The police then warned the demonstrators and repeatedly ordered them to leave the tracks. They were asked to continue their demonstration elsewhere or go home. All demonstrators who did not comply were removed from the tracks and arrested. They were taken by bus to another location. There they were presented and released. Damage was caused both on the tracks and in the buses. One officer was injured by a blow to the face from an activist. This officer was taken to the hospital. Another officer was bitten, and a third was hit, but both were able to continue their work.

Four individuals were arrested for resisting arrest and assault. Three individuals were arrested for vandalism and insult. These seven detainees were taken to the police station. They were presented there and are still in custody.

The police and demonstrations
The police assist in organizing demonstrations on behalf of the mayor to ensure safety for demonstrators and the surrounding area. Therefore, we are visibly present and in contact with the demonstrators. This way, we keep a finger on the pulse. Our actions aim to de-escalate any tensions if necessary. We act when criminal offenses are committed, agreements are not followed, or the health of demonstrators or bystanders is at risk. We strive for a balance between freedom and safety at every demonstration.
