A 47-year-old man without a permanent address died on March 20. He was arrested on Wednesday, March 12, on suspicion of shoplifting. The suspect was subsequently transferred to the detention center in Groningen. There, the man became unwell. Medical assistance was initiated in the detention center, after which he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The man died in the hospital on March 20.

The National Police Internal Investigations Department has launched an investigation, as is customary when a detainee dies. No further announcements will be made while the investigation is ongoing.
