Police officers arrived on Saturday evening around 10:30 PM at the A58 near Waarde. There had been a collision involving two cars. One car was in a ditch beside the road. Next to the car, the police found four people: two 20-year-old men from Vlissingen (one of whom was the driver), an 18-year-old man from Middelburg, and a 27-year-old woman from Sint-Maartensdijk. The other car also had four people inside: three men from Goes aged 18 and 19 (2x) years old and a 22-year-old man from Vlissingen.
Suspected Drugs Involved
The cars apparently collided while changing lanes, after which the car driven by the 20-year-old man from Vlissingen ended up in the ditch via the shoulder.
Multiple ambulances arrived on the scene to examine the eight involved individuals. Two of them, passengers of the car in the ditch, had to go to a hospital for checks.
While one police unit took care of the people from the car in the ditch, another unit checked the people from the other car. The driver of that car, a 19-year-old man from Goes, had to cooperate with a breath test and a saliva test. The second test indicated that the man was likely under the influence of drugs while driving. He was taken to the police station. There, he cooperated with a blood test to determine if and what he had used. A report was filed against him for driving under the influence.
Stolen Car
Meanwhile, it turned out that the man who had driven the car in the ditch did not have a valid drivers license. And that the car had been stolen earlier that evening. The rightful owner had parked his car near the station in Vlissingen on Saturday afternoon and was under the impression that it was still there. Police officers then arrested the driver and one passenger on suspicion of handling stolen goods, causing a traffic accident, and driving without a valid license. They spent the night in jail and are being interrogated today.
Both involved cars were towed by a towing company.
